Umrao lit the earthen stove in her kitchen, grimacing as she blew into a pipe to make the fire catch evenly across the wood. After placing the iron pot on the flame, she began to rummage through the bags that Mirza had brought, to find the oil. As she looked through the supplies, her face suddenly lit up.

Nestled among the groceries was a small round tin of multani mitti. The beauty clay was deliciously fragrant, but it was the container that took her breath away. She remembered having mentioned this brand to Mirza, as an example of the ludicrous extravagance of the very-very-wealthy ladies of Delhi society. He had chuckled and said, ‘Thank God you are not fond of such things. That would bankrupt us!’

Umrao carefully unscrewed the top of the tin. Atop the packed clay was a small applicator pillow made of muslin. And below the lid was a perfectly fitted mirror. It was a marvel of packaging that made her gasp. The clay was infused with an ethereally musky perfume. She looked into the mirror and smiled the shyest smile she had in decades. Then she carefully closed the lid, put the box away, and started cooking.
